I grew up with Teresa Brewer, Herb Alpert, Chet Atkins, Jim Reeves, Tiny Tim and similar on mom’s record changer. At night we listened to the Midnight Cowboy on WBAP 50,000 watts, a country western station in Dallas Texas 1,000 miles distant. My first exposure to rock was En La Gadda da Vida, every kid in school could play the drum solo on our desk.
Later I heard Yellow Brick Road when it first came out and started listening to all the various music from that era: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Beach Boys, Alice Cooper, Linda Ronstadt, and Bob Marley. This somehow morphed into classical, and I listened exclusively to albums from the library – the complete works of Beethoven, Handel, Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, etc. then somehow stumbled onto Segovia and focused on classical guitar.
One day Spyro Grya came to town and I discovered Jazz. This led to exploring international music of all kinds.
If you tune into my show, there is a good chance you will hear a bit of this journey …. Some of it new, some old, some borrowed, and some blues.
